Why am I unable to change the SKU Type for a SKU?

I am wondering why I can't change the type of SKU from Standard to Assembly in an existing product when I am adding a new SKU to it. We just created a new product, but because of this error, we have to keep building retired SKUs which will add clutter to our catalog. Is there anything we can do to be most efficient with our product catalog? 

Answer

Once a SKU is complete, you cannot change the SKU type. This is done to prevent issues with storefronts, such as SparkPay, as they do not properly interpret the SKU type change. When adding a new SKU, you simply need to click on the SKU type to bring up the dropdown menu, then select the desired option.
